Today was meant to be our wedding day. Unfortunately, COVID-19 put paid to our plans. However, we will still raise a toast to the freedom to marry and to the 1,201,607 Irish people who voted YES in the

After the joy of
#marref & the dignified landslide that was#repealthe8th I felt we’d morphed into a tolerant, open minded Ireland. Sad to see so much belittlement of those who celebrated the Pope’s visit . The institution is absolutely fair game. Ordinary Catholics aren’t. -
This day 5 years ago I voted for the first time, and I voted for my own right to get married. The result was/is massive progress worth celebrating. But the months and years that lead up to it mostly weren't. Let us remember the human cost when fighting for social justice.

Who remembers this, from 2015? We announced the march to Belfast City Hall on Saturday 23 May as the results of the marriage referendum

Non-LGBTQ people don’t realise that
#MarRef was actually such a stressful time and wasn’t enjoyable until the result was announced. The stress and anger reading such horrible things about my community from the “No” side for weeks is not forgotten even after such a landslide “Yes” -
Happy
#MarriageEqualityDay the day I got to hug@Colmogorman and share in the joy in the RDS. It was only during repeal that I regretted not being more involved in the#MarRef but I did a little bit.#MarRefMemories Enjoy today and celebrate to all who put in the work

I’ve decided that 22 May every year is Grá day.

At the
#sharedisland dialogue this morning and in the first 10 mins abortion has been referred to as 'difficult and divisive' even though 2/3 of people voted to#repealthe8th, a bigger % than in#MarRef. Not hopeful for the review when a Mnister is saying things like that. -
In Galway City on the first few nights of canvassing for
#Marref there was me, two non party political gay men, a member of the communist party and 4 Shinners, and SF continued to show up through the whole campaign. No sign of FF at all, and no sign of FG except for a photo shootShow this thread -
“It appealed to people’s better sense of themselves...that’s a very powerful appeal to make to people – to basically say, your best self knows that this is right”

5 years ago today, my granny Kitty Cotter, who was 101 at the time, put on her famous rainbow cardigan and went out and voted YES! I’m still so proud of her

Lots of snide remarks on twitter today about who did most to win
#marref No need to be divisive about this happy occasion. There’s lots of credit to go round. And yes, that includes the Gov of the day. A referendum, of any kind, does not happen unless a Gov proposes it. -
Just received my Belgian polling card for the
#EUelections. As happy as I am, I can't help but feel disappointed that there is no#EmigrantVote for Irish people abroad. Despite enthusiasm of#HomeToVote in#MarRef and#RepealThe8th, many of us have no national vote anywhere.pic.twitter.com/BNOI3ouLTS

Remembering
#MarRef 5 years on, and can't let it pass without recalling Brighid and Paddy Whyte's message that struck a chord with a lot of people at the time. I think it really captured a lot of Irish people's attitude to the vote. http://www.votewithus.org/video/brighid-paddy …Show this thread -
I've been in Russia over the past days. I attended a socialist feminist event at the weekend and did an interview with Russia Today TV. The
#repealthe8th &#marref votes have been watched closely. I'm very impressed with bravery of the LGBTQ+ & worker activists I've met.#dubwpic.twitter.com/5Xlt2sHXEy

As a young queer women, the no campaign was the first time I'd seen the vitriol and hate people were capable of. I heard classmates who spoke in class against marriage equality, it broke my heart. The resounding yes vote really meant and still means so fucking much to me.

Trans inclusion in intersectional activism was important to
#YesEquality during the#marref as was the inclusion of rights for trans men directly affected by the 8th and the inclusion of trans activists by@freesafelegal and@AmnestyIreland during#repealthe8th He objects to itpic.twitter.com/qOBXFAjWG3

Let there be no doubt - a coalition of far right groups has been proposed. To borrow a phrase - "an axis of evil". Ireland is better than that. We
#repealedthe8th We voted for#marref We're only going forward.#RacistsOut#StrongerTogetherpic.twitter.com/63mOMWxH6gShow this thread -
5 years since Ireland said yes to love. Walking through town the day after the results I felt like Dublin was a totally new place. The sun was shining, there were so many LGBTQ+ couples walking around holding hands & strangers were smiling at one another in a knowing way
