    Hi, ! Barbara Dee here. Several of my MGs are about mental health. MY LIFE IN THE FISH TANK is about a 7th grader whose big brother has bipolar disorder. My next MG, HAVEN JACOBS SAVES THE PLANET, is about a 7th grader with eco-anxiety—anxiety about the climate crisis.

    I just finished this beautiful book today and yes—absolutely cried real tears. So much heart and gorgeous layering of symbols and themes. Definitely recommend. Thank you for sharing such a moving story

    A4. I think schizophrenia is difficult to portray in a balanced way. . . I can't think of many current MG books portraying that particular disorder. It can be such a challenging disease to struggle with.

    Another Verse Novel is THE LOST LANGUAGE. And it deals with a girl finding her voice, but it also has a mother facing depression. And a suicide attempt by a parent. Those are tough subjects. But kids live them. Seeing someone else work though it is important.

    A few years ago I was on a Tough Topics panel at a NerdCamp. I asked the attendees which issues they wanted to read in MG. One principal said: “Mental health disorders we used to associate with high school students. Because now we’re seeing them in middle school.”
