    2 years in a row for Gulf RI leading to Louisiana cat 4 landfall. Both and (pending post-event analysis) came ashore with max sustained winds 150 mph, both having been at 85 mph just 24 hours prior. Ida will remain hurricane for a ways inland. Houma then Baton Rouge.

    Explosive deepening w/ is unfortunately still occuring. Finally got a good dropsonde into the eye & it shows 936-hPa w/ 14-kt winds. Ida now has a lower central pressure than that observed in last year.

    This mornings model runs on in the Caribbean support a major hurricane in the gulf next week. This already doesn’t look good for areas like the western Louisiana coast, where hit just last year. The anniversary of that storm is on Friday 👀

    has lower pressure than did at this distance approaching landfall. It's also headed toward a higher populated area. And it has more time to strengthen before running out of real-estate.

    Breaking: Inside the core, this will be the worst storm just about anyone in Louisiana has experienced. Latest hurricane hunters show winds near 160 mph and pressure down to 932mb... If NHC verifies, this could be a Category 5 shortly.

    We talk about worst-case scenarios normally hypothetically. But in the case of , this is real life. & most unfortunately, this dangerous hurricane is heading into a more densely populated area than the region affected last year. Let's hope warnings have been heeded.

    Interesting that NHC decides to issue a special advisory. The new forecast landfall intensity is 135KT, but NHC does not rule out a slightly higher value (ie a Cat.5 landfall). Recon data are similar to what was found in , so the current estimate of 130kt is a good call.

    I don’t think it’s being recognized enough that we’ve had 2 150mph storms make landfall in the same state in a year span. That is just ridiculous and almost as rare as it gets. and will be remembered for a long time. Remarkable

    One year ago today category 4 Laura made near Cameron, very early in the morning with 150mph winds making it tied for the strongest on record to ever hit Louisiana. unfortunately destroyed the radar in Lake Charles.
