One of the best films of 2021–that I pushed to win Best First Feature at London Film Festival—is shortlisted at the Oscars. PLAYGROUND reminds me of the Dardennes and László Nemes’ SON OF SAUL. Immersive, tactile and ultimately heartbreaking.

The PRESTO project team visited music classes and choir rehearsals in primary, secondary, and district music schools in Budapest, and observed a rehearsal of the New Liszt Ferenc Chamber Choir, led by Prof László Nemes.
A conductor gestures in front of a seated choir as they read from their music scores.

I just wanted to remind you that SON OF SAUL is a masterpiece. This movie deserve a Criterion release. Can’t wait for whatever László Nemes does next. Yes, I was also among the few fans of SUNSET.

I had the amazing pleasure of conducting a Q&A with Laszlo Nemes and Vlad Ivanov on Friday, for the Romanian release of Sunset. So I figured out I'd show off a little bit 💅

Son of Saul (2015) dir. László Nemes A terrifying glimpse at the nightmarish world of a Jewish Hungarian prisoner in Auschwitz. Part of the Sonderkommando, Saul Ausländer attempts to bury a child he mistakes for his son. Chilling but essential viewing #HolocaustMemorialDay #film

Absolutely beautiful preview of Sunset on 35mm last night with director László Nemes explaining the doppelgänger element he believes exists in human nature in an insightful Q&A. A thousand thanks to the full house who came to enjoy this with us!

Son of Saul ★★★½ I betcha even Michael Haneke approves of this holocaust film. #LászlóNemes' directorial debut depicts the horrors of concentration camp life. It's only the second Hungarian film to win Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, the first being Szabó's Mephisto.
