    Today is Labour Day. Samuel Parnell achieved fame as the founder of the eight-hour working day in New Zealand — a right he had fought for as a carpenter upon arrival at Petone on 8 February 1840. Labour Day has been celebrated as a holiday since 1900.

    But apart from weekends, occupational health and safety, child labour laws, the 8-hour work days, collective bargaining, equity hiring, parental leave, retirement age, minimum wage, and redress against abusive employment practice...WHAT HAVE UNIONS EVER DONE FOR US?!

    Reading tweets & thinking about my immigrant parents who worked around the clock to build a better life 4 us. Respect to all who work 4 their loved ones (including caregiving in home spaces) - esp those facing systems that have & continue to marginalize & exploit them.

    Before this comes to an end, I want to point out that we at the CBC are not much better than many of the striking companies we cover across the country. 25% of our workers are casuals with fewer rights, no security and often no benefits.
