    154 years ago, Black folks in Texas got the word they were free. June 19, 1865 is now known as Freedom Day. Shout out to Ms. Opal Lee who has been working for years to get Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday. She has traveled the country on this mission.

    is one of many days our Ancestors in western hemisphere set aside to mark our victories. We were't given anything: We forced history's hand. Spain, England, France, America: All tried to end us. We take this day seriously. Our struggle continues.

    On June 19th, 1865 the remaining slaves of the former Confederate States of America were finally set free. On this day, we celebrate freedom as we continue to fight for equality. Happy Freedom Day! Happy JUNETEENTH!

    On June 19, 1865, the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free -- 2.5 years AFTER President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.

    Here’s a portion of “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” written by James Weldon Johnson in 1900. The song was originally written as a poem. It was put to music now as we know it by his brother John Rosamond Johnson in 1905.

    Happy Juneteenth Y’all!! This beautiful holiday marks the end of slavery in the U.S. and deserves far greater representation and appreciation. Remember we are our ancestors wildest dreams.
