11 Dec 1917, British Gen Allenby took surrender of #Jerusalem. Entered city on foot thro' Jaffa Gate, in deliberate contrast to perceived arrogance of Kaiser's 1898 entry on horseback. He reputedly said, “I won’t ride my horse into the city into which my Lord rode a donkey.” #WW1
