    1981 Bobby Sands & eventually 9 other prisoners began a hunger strike seeking political prisoner (not criminal)status in the Maze Prison. While imprisoned, Sands was elected to Westminster as an MP. Sands survived for 66 days before dying. He was 27.

    1898 Fr Hugh O'Flaherty was born in Cork. 'The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican' was a major figure of the Catholic resistance to Nazism. He avoided SS assassination attempts & saved the lives of 6500 Allied soldiers& Jewish civilians during WW2.

    1 March-31 August: Hedgerow cutting & vegetation burning is prohibited! It is absolutely essential that hedges are kept safe for birds to nest in; they are protected BY LAW! They are also necessary for e.g. moths & insects! 📷one of my lovely blackbirds

    1965 Roger Casement's state funeral was held in Dublin. A Knight & human rights activist, Casement was hanged in 1916 for his role smuggling arms for the Irish Volunteers during the Easter Rising. His body was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.
