    team had the pleasure to had a short stop at the South Korean base "King Sejong" to visit our colleagues in the antarctic peninsula

  12. Science doesn't sleep. Up at 4am to watch a trawl of a net along the seabed - the only way to sample the extraordinary variety of life at the bottom of the fjord

  13. Alternatively we have insects to snack on - courtesy of the Korean research station we visited (they also had infinitely better broadband ). Strangely, the bugs tasted of kidney beans. Same texture too.

  14. Celebrations on board the RRS James Clark Ross in the commemorating 200th anniversary of the first sighting of Antarctica. We understand the vanilla, chocolate and lemon cake by John Liddy (Pursar) was very much enjoyed by all!

  15. Absolutely dreadful internet connectivity this week on the James Clark Ross, so just catching up now. John the Purser baked a cake to celebrate . Didn't last long.

    RRS James Clark Ross & leave Deception Is. thru the intimidating, misted cliffs towering over the channel, Neptunes Bellows. Ahead, 2 days sailing across Drake Passage. We have a study date with the Burdwood Bank.

    ship JCR in Whalers Bay, Deception island with Neptunes Window in the background. Dark, volcanic sands are swallowing the crumbling, historic buildings & slaughtered whale bones.

    A visit today to Deception Island. A starkly beautiful location, and the crumbling remains of the whaling station stand as testament to an ugly period in the history of humans in Antarctica.

    sails thru 'Neptunes bellows' (narrow channel) into the flooded caldera of Deception island. Mist shrouded & horshoe shaped, it oozes history; of exploration, whaling & eruption 50 years ago.
