    This thread on the is full of insight, but I want to highlight this. Academics-- ESPECIALLY those of us on the outside-- have a responsibility to remember that this movement is, at its heart, human beings trying to save their home. We can't lose sight of that.

    8. In its absence, Western academia can seem tone-deaf to the everyday struggles of peoples half a world away. While my research seeks to tell Hong Kong stories, the city isn’t a social laboratory for me. It’s first and foremost a place I call home, inhabited by those I love.

    Teenager arrested for assaulting the police. Whilst in custody he received injuries that hospitalised him. Judge declared that without evidence to the contrary, the police is not to be held responsible because who knows what happened.

    Most who followed the last year would remember this viral work. Wong was in fact drawing himself. Each night, he scoured the telegram groups looking at photos of the arrested, fearing he would find one of his students among them.

    [10.1 Causeway Bay] Dozens were stopped and searched outside of Fashion Walk. One of the cops ordered the others to “check their telegram“. Citizens waiting to be searched were not allowed to use their smartphones.
