It’s time for my top 5 books of the year. That is, my favorite books I read for the 1st time in 2019, & are of relatively recent vintage (no
#FullLoeb’s). Lots of tough competition this time, so apologies to those on the office floor.Prikaži ovu nit -
#FullLoeb is back! Now L059, Books 7-10, another round of Pliny the Younger and all these letters. pic.twitter.com/lLMHCH2Jq6

In works and days Hesiod makes a number of recommendations that sound rather sensible. 1st off: "Never pour a libation of sparkling wine to Zeus after dawn with unwashen hands." Can't disagree with that, can you?

Pliny the Younger was the kind of guy who'd compose poetry while everyone else was watching the Super Bowl. "And if during the running the racers were to change colours, their partisans wold change sides."

Chilling ghost story that Pliny the Younger passed on about a ghost in chains ("fetters" in Edwardian English). Wonder if this inspired Dickens for Jacob Marley?

Now that's what I call going

Read this from the

This one is a bit of a mystery to me, but perhaps a contractor can chime in and enlighten us "When you are building a house, do not leave it rough-hewn, or a cawing crow may settle on it and croak."

Here's another one to grow on: "Never put the lable upon the mixing-bowl at a wine party, for malignant ill-luck is attached to that."

I am perfectly content to go
#FullLoeb vicariously through you. @ -
If you've ever wanted an exposition on tears and what happens when people cry in each other's presence, this chapter in Clitophon and Leucippe seems like the place to start.

So far the Adventures of Leucipe and Clitophon is a delightful romp through elite Roman marriage practices and love at first sight (spoiler alert: they don't seem to go together).

Welcome to the
#FullLoeb team! I started with Apollodorus of Rhodes L001) about 20 months ago and am at L045 now. I completely ignore the Greek or Latin, which makes it go a bit quicker . . . -
I heard that once you go
#FullLoeb, you won’t go back (to regular books).
