  3. 3/4 Regulators need to quantify the distribution and behaviour of to understand potential interactions with developments. A widely used technique for such site characterisation, land-based vantage point surveys have a number of limitations.

4/4 Scopoli's shearwaters showed sex-specific tactics, but when intensity increased both sexes were more likely to switch to the CF tactic, suggesting a reduction of energetic costs associated with dynamic .

2 studies conducted on -tailed (n=180trips) revealed that birds performed longer self-feeding trips around the full moon. But returned during the moonlit part of the night, which goes against the predation avoidance hypothesis.

4/4 Within-colony breeding location may determine the foraging area, promoting different behaviours among conspecifics. Hence, sampling from different subcolonies might be required to capture and understand behaviour variation within the same colony.

I know it looks like noise, but actually it isn't! It's the result of a post-smoothing procedure (and of another correction) that we applied to minimize incorrect labelling of single locations. We decided not to add any other covariates than speed and angle

3 Mates were not more similar in size/mass; however, they had more similar dive depths, spatial use (bearings, distances travelled, overlap in foraging areas) & nitrogen values in blood. Nitrogen values in feathers were not more similar than expected by chance.

  9. 4/4 . This will investigate methods to address the current limitations of vantage point surveys. Working towards proposing a standardised survey methodology for monitoring within tidal stream environments.

The answer is in tweet number 2 of the presentations 😁 which means surprisingly it is not 25, its 30 species! Great Skua seems to be making it the most of the words generalist +top predator! Thank you all for your participation!!!

4/4 The contrasting seasonal and regional use of trophic resources found highlights high plasticity of Scopoli's shearwaters in the use of trophic resources

3/4 During the non-breeding season, the large overlap in feather δ13C and δ15N values between colonies suggests a common use of non-breeding areas which are known to be on the West coast of Africa

3 Activity patterns showed that birds also foraged at night. Foraging activity during moonlit part of the night was similar to the day, and increased with moonlight intensity, suggesting that WTS take advantage of the moonlight to forage also at night

Yup. I have a similar problem but scaling up instead of down! Two colonies very close together, use similar foraging and non-breeding areas, and have the same phenology... are the same "Population"? WTF is a colony, then?

  16. Odgovor korisniku/ci

Yeah, that's really interesting too. Seems like it depends on lots of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that clearly vary between species and colonies.... there's so much more work to do to disentangle all of this!

    Odgovor korisniku/ci

Yes, it could be indeed the case! We originally tracked a subsample of birds with GPS+accelerometers, in order to quantify the energetic expenditure linked to the two tactics. Unfortunately we didn't manage to obtain data. We'll keep trying :)

Exactly! On colony, burrows are located on the Summerland Peninsula coastline pretty much without interruptions. However, there are rocky outcrops that delimit the established paths that penguins use, and penguins would always use the same path!

  19. Odgovor korisniku/ci

Yes, great question. I think it's a combo. Males foraged in areas of >chlorophyll (data not shown) esp @ coast. So, seems like there's still a degree of coastal segregation. Islands had <productivity but more space to dilute competition

Exciting. I am looking forward to the first results. Could you outline some of the limitations? I am actually not familiar with the use of surveys in this context at all.
