    On this day, celebrating two who continue to have an enormous influence on me: my mother, Gladys Fahrig, and my aunt, Rebecca Fahrig Landrum. While they were very different in personality, they were both strong, smart, kind, and loving. Role models.

    My mom rode dirbikes, drove muscle cars and can fix almost anything with parts. She's always found a way to outsmart the physical limitations of her diminutive size and ignored any and all limitations our patriarchal society has tried to limit her with.

    Grammy had to quit School in the 3rd grade to take care of younger siblings so her parents could work. My mom was the first in her family of 17 kids to graduate from high school. My aunt was the first to attend a professional trade school * became a beautician.

    #2, my maternal grandmother, a 4'11" Irish immigrant, Salvation Army officer, who spoke 7 languages & was an expert in history, literature, antique furniture & textiles & religion/philosphy. Raised 5 children alone on $10/wk during the Depression

    the heroines from my past were Irish. They expected no special treatment. Tell them they couldn't do it to ensure it got done. They loved and backed up their men. They expected & loved masculinity.
