The agricultural age is ending. For most of humanity - and for the rest of the living planet - this is good news. Perhaps the best news we've had for centuries. food. My column.

As expected, I was booed to the rafters at the (Oxford Real Farming Conference) yesterday. But I felt it was my duty to turn up and explain what I believe climate breakdown will do to farming, and why foods are likely to be essential.

Here's my response, in the comment thread, to the people expressing horror at the idea of foods.

.'s article 'Lab-grown food will soon destroy farming – and save the planet' introduces new interesting terms! : brewing microbes through precision fermentation : food from fermentation.

While the picture this paints seems a bit one-sided (strongly technology-focussed) and perhaps overly optimistic, it's definitely an interesting one ...

Farmers will lose out, however. foods are likely to drive most of them out of business within a generation or so. So they will need public help during this transition. Instead of pouring subsidies into a dying industry, governments should be helping people to leave it.

I'm all for making changes in order to help save the planet, we all need to. But I honestly don't believe going is the answer. I for one do not want to be eating lab-grown food, nor do I believe it is the healthy answer for any of us.

!!!! Seriously scared. They don’t need to be. There is such great opportunity in food that we can create policies to more than compensate those threatened by the change.

I can see the direction this will go. The rich eat food as we know it, and the rest of us eat - I have a problem with the class issue here.

Thankfully, Corbyn’s demise into obscurity will be another nail in the coffin of Moonbat’s Eco-Communism. There is no political support for his oppression of rural communities. Eradicating farmers & farming would be social & economic suicide.

Indeed. Our countryside must be more than sheep, cows and other monocultures!

I still have a problem with the class issue. I like cheese, for example. This doesn’t create EVERYBODY eats , this is compulsory veganism. Those who can afford, will still eat what they want.

I’m pretty sure that wasn’t looking for support from the Adam Smith Institute for food, still less to further their agenda of building on the Green Belt, but interesting to note their opportunism:
