One of the best things I've heard from
#FAT2020: We need to stop trying to continuously optimize broken technologies, and instead, start questioning their existence.@fatconference -
I am honored and v. happy, that my work resonates with this community. It was my 1st time at
@fatconference and I cannot think of a more welcoming, more inspiring community. It truly feels like I found 'my people'. Thank you to all who made this conference possible.#FAT2020

Great paper: major US companies that offer automated hiring systems in the UK rely on US understandings of discrimination law & ethnic groups when operating in Europe & may not comply w. data protection law

Wanna say,
@karen_ec_levy deserves all the call-outs she's getting in this@YBenkler#FAT2020 keynote, and more: one of the most brilliant, incisive, and generous colleagues I've had the pleasure to work with (and that's saying something). Never a bad time to say I stan! -
#FAT2020 asks us what is fairness? This week I hope we also ask: for who is fairness, what does it take in different contexts, and which people are expected to put in the work? pic.twitter.com/Q6eW2tqjgL

Pre-trial risk scoring systems focus on defendants. What if they focussed on judges?
@chels_bar's challenge to#FAT2020 to "study up" - to research and develop in a way that puts the magnifying glass over structures of power instead of solely marginalised groups. pic.twitter.com/3vZYoDSXmN

Awesome talk by
@rajiinio at#FAT2020 on closing the AI accountability gap! The paper draws on several other domains to develop new approaches for AI accountability. pic.twitter.com/M3NiFIYmaZ

Very good question at
#FAT2020: how do we handle situations where even ethical and accountable design decisions can degrade over time if and when social situations evolve? Ethical design requires ongoing, regular auditing just as we see in industries like the financial sector.

The new acronym for FAT* is here! Starting with the 2021 conference, we’ll be ACM FAccT for ‘Fairness, ACCountability, and Transparency’

Pithy observation from
@FusterGloria at#FAT2020, followed by important exploration of the confusing state of online gender classification and innovative ideas around how GDPR might help untangle it and rectify persistent patterns of misgendering. pic.twitter.com/ttuS5hd285

FINALLY someone (

Really interesting methodological discussion by
@VidushiMarda m#FAT2020 about how to study socio-technical systems: if access to data itself is blocked—investigate the institutional processes that bring it into being and operationalize bias and discrimination. pic.twitter.com/nv0eU1Nej2

My takeaway from
#FAT2020: I've just found a community which I would like to belong. Questioning the 'status quo' of AI from different perspectives to enforce social justice & human rights. pic.twitter.com/Cgu8dpVSzj

Honestly, police using ANY machine learning/algorithmic-based computational or predictive tools is terrifying. Police do not make us safer. Giving police more tools to expand, increase, or hasten surveillance or criminalization is a terrible idea.
