  8. I went to a "non-denominational" church in Texas for ages 12-18, and it turned me off religion for almost a decade. The church had a "casual atmosphere" but authoritarian beliefs and implicit right-wing politics. One of the pastors was a gay conversion therapist.

    I left conservative Christianity as a young adult because I was unhappy with the way my community treated women, sexuality, and science. I respect the value religion, faith, and spirituality can bring to other people's lives, but it's not for me.
