My go to method for managing tech distractions is setting clear expectations before a lesson and holding the students accountable for their actions while using

One of my biggest pet peeves is that we act like we live in a world where social media doesn't exist. However, I think we have a huge issue with kids AND adults when it comes to online interactions on these platforms.

A6 How do we distract students from the idea that there is only one solution and that there are many paths
#edtechchat -
A6: How is lack of digital citizenship affecting the use of digital tools within the classroom?
#edtechchat -
A3: Choice and more choice! If you allow students to choose from options you select, students are more likely to be engaged.

A5: Modeling, role playing, & scenarios. Also, instead of focusing on specific new tech, give teachers the resources they need to "keep up" with current trends (like these Twitter chats, blogs, etc.).

A5 model the model. I hear stories from former students where their professors don’t allow tech. Many times tech causes fear from the Ts. Don’t be afraid of it, embrace it.

As I am reading through conversations on this topic I think we should consider ways to better engage parents in the policies, monitoring and modeling. They can be awesome advocates in this area and are usually very supportive.

A4 have your students help write the policy for the classroom and create ownership bonds

A4: We need to be sure students are being taught to be good digital citizens. Technology is a HUGE part of their lives, but they may not have been exposed with the responsibility they have as users. We can help them see that.

Q3 definitely circulating the room to monitor students, teaching them what good digital citizenship is, setting expectations, and using monitoring software

A3: Apple classroom allows me to see what my Ss are doing on their iPads. I can also share directly with them

A1a: Engagement is important, but students will have to do unengaging things in their futures. I think we should balance engagement with teaching of skills to avoid distraction and sustain attention on complex tasks that require focus.

A2 Ed tech can help students become more engaged. Instead of reading about an assignment in a textbook, they can create videos, "travel" in VR, and use tools that interest them
#EdTechChat -
A2: there are literally apps and extensions to help students focus but the reality is if they believe in the purpose of the lesson, tech or no tech, they engage and give it their all. It’s not about the tool, it’s about bigger picture. Reaching them where they are.

A2 When integrated correctly edtech can definitely keep students engaged especially using the SAMR method (or similar methods)to ensure learning is taking place

A2: I know at my middle school and high school the teachers could see the other student's screens if we were using our school's technology and it was harder to go off task, because then the teachers could see what you were doing.

A2: I think
#edtech can bring a lot to the table! Students all learn in a variety of ways and using these platforms can reach students that otherwise wouldn’t learn the content but it must be used in an engaging way, rather than “just watch this video”#edtechchat -
Back in the early 2000s, I was distracted by doodles on my desk, what my friends were talking about, basketball, and trying to read my book while the teacher wasn't looking. Ss will always be distracted when their not actively engaged in their learning.

A1: Ss are distracted by edtech in the classroom in a variety of different ways. Some of which include: 1. Lack of digital citizenship learning experiences. 2. We haven't modeled expectations or how to use the tool effectively. 3. Lack of choice.
