    Ida Hampton is credited as the first Black Deaf woman to enter and graduate from . Hampton entered Gallaudet University in September 1952 and graduated in May 1957 with a Bachelor’s in Education. She spent 32 years of her life as a teacher.

    David Garrard A former QB for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. Garrard had his 1st bout w/ Crohn’s disease in 2004. A year later he had a portion of his intestines removed & was able to continue his football career. He's has done several PSAs about Crohn’s.

    During slavery, owners often killed disabled slaves, seeing them as of no use to them. Blind Tom's owner and promoter pocketed the $1.5 million he made a year in performances. However, he was unaware the was a slave, African American, or the concept of race.

    Poly Styrene, punk pioneer & founder of the band X-Ray Spex lived with schizophrenia & bipolar disorder. The British rocker wrote the feminist anthem Oh Bondage Up Yours! and recorded music as a solo artist right up until her 2011 death from breast cancer.

    Singer Macy Gray she revealed her bipolar condition in 2007. She went on to talk more about her condition in 2010 when asked how it felt to be bipolar: “It just has very extreme ups and downs. It’s one thing and then another, and they’re always opposite.”

    What do all 3 of these black women songstresses in Hollywood have in common? Jennifer Lewis (who sings and acts), Macy Gray, and Mariah Carey have bipolar disorder. Yes, mental illnesses are a valid disability. There is no such thing as looking disabled.

    is essential so we can stop whitewashing disability history. The erasure is more than overt, it's intentional. Disabled black ppl will not be erased anymore. If the movement had their way we wouldn't include at all. This is pushback against ableist racism.
