    Over the weekend, Dashawn Carter passed on Rikers Island. We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Mr. Carter was incarcerated pretrial and was just sent back to Rikers from a state psychiatric hospital.

    DOC Comm. has 9 days to submit a plan to "fix" Rikers to the federal judge monitoring Rikers. With the 4th incarcerated person this year passing away on Rikers over the weekend, it is clear there is no fixing Rikers. NYC must to save lives.

    Some of the saddest shit I have ever seen was at Rikers. Nothing good. so tragic

    His name was Deshawn Carter and he was only 25 years old. I don’t know how many times we can explain that people taking their lives because of the inhumane conditions they’re being subjected to in Rikers simply because they can’t afford to purchase their freedom isn’t suicide.

    Imagine if , , ran a special addition series about the lives of those that died at Rikers. I'd definitely watch. It'd definitely help.

    Resist the urge to call people ex-cons, inmates, and all the other language the system uses to dehumanize people. There’s a reason why 21 people died at Rikers and the media only ever says inmate died— they dehumanize people so you won’t care what’s happened to them
