Harbour Seal. This critter was one of several hanging out on the ice at Renews during a recent tour with some clients. While seals can be found in our waters year-round, winter often offers the best chance to photograph them up close.

Pink-footed Goose. Another shot of this rarity from Europe that has been visiting St. John's this fall/winter. These small geese breed as close as Greenland and Iceland, but remain an unusual sight in North America.

#SuperbOwlSunday! Resident but seldom seen here in Newfoundland, I've been lucky to have a couple close encounters with the tiny Boreal Owl. This is one of my favourite images from one of those days.#SuperbOwl#BirdTheRock#ExploreNL#BirdsNL#ExploreCanada#NatureRockspic.twitter.com/Up96NGDMJu

A nap in the snow. This Pink-footed Goose, a rare visitor from Europe, has been present in St. John's since mid-autumn and is handling our rather difficult winter with grace. Here it settled in for a rest while some fresh snow fell on the pond.

Newfoundland is home to the world's southernmost herds of caribou, and I enjoyed several encounters with visiting birders this January. Deep snow posed no problem for these hardy animals, and we found them foraging contentedly on the windswept barrens.

A REDWING was photographed (with robins) in Clarenville NL today. Third report on the island this winter, but possibly the same bird reported in Lumsden earlier this month. Photo by Pauline Drover (posted with permission).

Willow Ptarmigan are often tough to spot, but have been a little more obvious recently due to the deep snow. This beautiful critter posed nicely for my very happy clients earlier this month.

Bohemian Waxwing. These nomads of the north descend on Newfoundland & Labrador most winters, feeding on the abundant berry crop that lingers into our cold weather. Always a treat see!

Dovekie (known locally as "bullbird"). January is the best time to see these winter visitors, and I've been happy to share several very (very!) close encounters with visiting birders so far this month.
