  2. We are overjoyed that have been crowned 2019 ! That's a win for seabirds, a win for penguins but most importantly, a win for a bird that deserves the highest public profile as they fight for survival on mainland Aotearoa.

Sorry, but this is BS. My bad for making a misleading map. The point of it was to highlight the interest in going beyond NZ borders. But there were only 335 votes from Russia, all looking legit.

Here's a fun fact, When they hid the vote tally for the Bird of the Year, the Black-throated FInch was way ahead with almost 8,000 votes- 10 times more votes than there are Southern Black-throated Finches known to be left alive.

There used to be a takahē called Greg on Tiritiri Matangi who really liked people. Greg is sadly dead now but you can still go see lots of contenders on Tiritiri (pic: Arno Gasteiger)

  12. Full report up now. The black-throated finch won with 11,153 votes (35% of the total), and 7,802 clear of second. The tawny frogmouth came second, and could have been the first nocturnal bird to win

Shane Jones - endemic to Northland, proving oddly durable. My cartoon for today's newspapers.

  14. AND THE WINNER IS ... Black-throated finch wins 2019 bird of the year with tawny frogmouth second

Stage 2 in the battle for Australia's top bird for 2019 - you have to vote AGAIN! Cast your vote for the long-suffering Black-throated finch. Make 2019 the year of this embattled finch; it truly deserves to be the bird of 2019

Comparison of NZ results with last year: Mōhua/yellowhead had the largest increase in relative votes, but poor kakī/black stilt had the largest decrease. And of course, congrats to hoiho for becoming the emperor!

Some much needed good news: Australians have voted the beautiful (and endangered) black-throated finch ! 🎉🖤
