    We're restoring an Apollo Guidance Computer for . Instead of core ropes, our AGC has a core rope simulator. I reverse-engineered the simulator circuitry, built an interface using a , and used it to run software on the vintage AGC.

    The Apollo Guidance Computer with cover removed, exposing the purple wire-wrapped backplane. At the back, two rope simulator boxes are mounted in place of the core rope modules. The interfaces at the front are modern.
    A core rope simulator box. It is a rectangular metal box with wires and circuitry. Most of the box holds Dipstiks, integrated circuit holders with solder lugs on top. The box has a Raytheon logo on it.
    Inside the rope simulator is a tangle of blue and red wire-wrapped wires. At the right is a block of cordwood circuitry. Two metal voltage regulators are on a heat sink at the back.
    My interface consists of a small printed circuit board with 10 integrated circuits mounted on top of a BeagleBone. Two thick cables from the board go to the two core rope interface boxes.
