What would have had to happen to keep power sector CO₂ emissions at 2015 levels: * Solar / wind would have had to grow twice as fast since 2015 (~size of China & US capacity in 2018); or * Replace 10% of coal in power sector with gas, essentially a 10% drop in coal!

New data from
#BPStats confirms that wind & PV are leading the
in CO2 emissions of the power sector in Europe.
Period 2008-2019:
Fossil generation:
Coal: -397 TWh (-37%)
Oil: -67 TWh
Gas: -144 TWh
Low-carbon:
Nuclear: -127 TWh
Hydro: +39 TWh
Wind & solar: +598 TWh (+350%) pic.twitter.com/MTLaU8DLfk

Global power generation grew 3.7% in 2018, one of the strongest rates in 20 years: * The developing world, particularly China & India, drove 80% of the increase * The US had an unexpected 3.7% growth, driven by weather * Renewables were behind 30% of the increase

The share of non-fossil fuels in the power mix has moved only slowly, despite rapid growth in solar & wind. The non-fossil share declined from 1998 (nuclear), but in 2018 it has now returned (solar/wind) to its 1998 value next to coal!
