    11 years in the making... tomorrow my pupillage ends and I finally qualify. I am apparently not what many people picture a barrister to be and am not from a ‘traditional’ background, but I did it. I am here taking up space. I Am a Barrister.

  2. In 1963, campaigners started a city-wide bus boycott against Bristol Omnibus Company's policy of not employing black crew. Its success paved the way for the 1965 Race Relations Act which outlawed discrimination. These are the kind of heroes we should learn about at school!

    Stella Thomas, born in Nigeria in 1906, was admitted to the Inn in 1929. She was Called to the Bar in 1933, the first female barrister from West Africa, and went on to a successful practice in Lagos, becoming West Africa’s first female magistrate in 1943.

  9. Attacked with acid at school, bullied into suppressing his sexuality, told “black people can’t swim” & was just 30m from the Manchester Arena bomb in 2017. But 🇬🇧 & 🇯🇲’s keeps smiling, inspiring & trying to change perceptions. 👉

    In 1954, Norma Sklarek became New York's first licensed female African-American architect. She was rejected by 29 firms: "They were not used to having women in their offices... and certainly not used to having African-Americans", so founded her own.
