    11 years ago I finished undergrad with a 2.95 GPA Today I received an official offer for tenure track professor at a R1 university. You can do anything if you focus and work hard

    Academia can drag you down because rejection is the norm, not the exception. You must celebrate every success, no matter how small. Set small goals and throw a mini-party for yourself when you meet them.

    Dear job applicant, Please send us a cover letter that no one will read. Please also send a teaching philosophy that no one will read. These documents are required, although the final decision will be made on the basis of your publications.

    Hey mentors - Before you scold a trainee for not meeting expectations, ask yourself: - Were the expectations communicated clearly? - Is there evidence that the trainee is NOT putting in effort? - Are there additional factors (ex. health issues, etc.) in play?

    Rejection is exceedingly common in academia. The acceptance rate for top journals is about 10%. Can you imagine a lawyer who loses 90% of his cases or a doctor who loses 90% of her patients?

  9. Hey - what's your most intense professional cringe moment? Mine: I was a visiting speaker at Fancy U. Dinner plans had gotten as far as making a reservation and telling me, but apparently no farther. I ended up sitting by myself at a table for 8 for 2 hours.

    Many junior scholars struggle with managing a research pipeline. I know I sometimes do. So , how do you do manage your pipeline? How many projects are you working on at one time? How do you know if you have too many/too few projects? Other tips that you have?

    New publication manual is here. New layout is helpful. Writing tips: avoid passive voice and use 1st person language instead of 3rd person.

  16. Sexual predators should not be allowed at academic conferences. If professional associations know that a prof has repeatedly violated students over decades, they are morally and ethically obligated to protect those survivors by taking action.

    I suggest we have a post-doc/industry career "draft", similar to the NFL draft, where people graduating with PhD's get all the flashing lights, swag, and national media attention. It'll be on PBS, of course.
