We had exciting discussions on stage (especially during the session on Binaural Processing with Hearing Impairment chaired by Sean and Jonas) and during the poster sessions at in San Jose. It's been so interesting and fun with great scientists from all over the world!

Many interesting talks at , including this one by Dáibhid Ó Maoiléidigh, who spoke on recent work on SOAEs in the gecko. Both ears act as a single (acoustically-coupled) active system for sound localization and weak signal detection

Negi: transcriptomics reveal Type I hair cells embryonic while Type II develop post-natal, w/ 2 differentiations and 3 lineages : TI striola + TI extra-striola + TII. Striola is established early. Why striola important to vestibule? Is there a cochlea equivalent?

Zhu: Otolith and canal afferent responses show different intensity and frequency tuning curves to sound and vibration – what is optimal stimuli to best target end-organs? A number of human VEMP tuning studies performed. Some diseases eg MD/hydrops, show tuning shifts.

Lopez-Escamez: vestibular phenotypes: episodic, progressive, fluctuating. Many, variable genes… subgroups eg familiar clustering, helpful. Intrinsic adaptation can masks true underlying dys/function in clinic, so genetic tests may be helpful to pinpoint locus of loss.

Eatock: Phenotype screening must challenge the vestibular system properly! VsEP is becoming popular – no need for turntable or eye recordings – but vibration is primarily otolith only. A mini head impulse test of SCCs?

Eatock: overviewed compelling shared evolution, development, organisation of cochlea and vestibule, yet distinct substrate, tuning, maps, directions, zones… systems level research must understand whole labyrinth and pathways. Hearing and balance researchers must talk!

Finally went to and loved the diverse program of symposiums and posters. Physiologists to physicians, anatomy from the tympanic membrane to auditory cortex, tools from transcriptomics to fNIRS. Great to meet audio, neuro, and otology colleagues – will be back!
