An artful place to rest your morning coffee. Isamu Noguchi's furniture designs reflect his interest in garden & landscape design. As both a designer and sculptor, his abstract forms blur the boundary between art and design. #APAHM #AAPIHeritageMonth Model IN-50 Coffee Table; 1944

To close out #APAHM, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some important Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander leaders working to ensure NHPI voices are empowered and heard across all levels of government. Swipe to learn more! (1/3)🧵
Highlighting
Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders:

The relationship that many islands in the Pacific have had with the US include a long, painful history of military force and colonial expansion. These complicated relationships have also led to often confusing citizenship and immigration laws that determine the voting rights of persons from these areas.
People in American Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) cannot vote in presidential elections because they reside in a territory rather than a US state. In these places, people can elect one nonvoting delegate to the US House of Representatives. Because of these rules, of the three Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI) currently in Congress, only one – Rep. Kaiali'i Kahele of Hawaii – has voting power.
While Hawaii is home to the greatest number of NHPIs today, 7 out of 10 NHPIs reside in the continental US as of 2010. NHPI communities continue to be underserved on many issues, including on voting rights, access to essential services, as well as the continued disenfranchisement of NHPIs through incarceration.

Despite this, NHPIs are resilient and a powerful force, and this is reflected in the leadership.
This Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, we want to give recognition to some of the NHPI leaders who have dedicated their lives to working on behalf of NHPI communities and empowering NHPIs to ensure their voices are heard at all levels of government and continue to build power across the United States.

As we celebrate #APAHM we must recognize that the crisis of violence against Asian New Yorkers, like Eunhee Chang and GuiYing Ma in my district, is also driving a mental health crisis. I am proud to join in calling for mental health resources for AAPI communities.
