BCG vaccine can also plausibly decrease risk of melanomahttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15617995
-
This is truly astonishing. If it holds up in trials the implication for treatment of a whole host of disease processes is revolutionary.

BCG is a type of mycobacteria or pseudocommensal that we coevolved with that helps tune the immune system that we have little exposure to now. But the melanoma thing also involves a mimicking protein. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1344159/ …

The other hypothetical mechanism of immune modulation is described here (this is the kind of weird cool stuff in medicine that I love to think about): https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/j.1365-2567.2008.03007.x …

But everyone in UK and Ireland gets BCG and we have type I diabetes etc. I didn’t think levels were lower in uk or Ireland than other countries or am I wrong? Please prove me wrong. It would be great if this were true.

For type 2 I agree of course. What makes this research so important is the vaccine’s effect on type 1.
