This is literally what Nick Bostrom believes. It won't shock me when some silicon valley tech elites start converting to Mormonism.

But why not simulate someone else's ancestors? Why would it have to be THE ancestors of the civ doing the sim? Bostrom's idiotic thought experiment argument has the same flaw as the basilisk. Maybe the basilisk punishes those it blames FOR creating it, not those who DIDN'T.

Bostrom’s formulation doesn’t preclude that possibility. And it would only increase the odds that we’re living in a computed world. Sample all the humanoid subjects. What are the odds that any given subject is living in a computed world, once we create many? Apply that to us.

"The odds". What are the odds that someone selling you a trinket is trying to cheat you? Pretty high, amirite Mr. Bayes? (The trinket is your argument.) Discourse is war.
