Most of these are just deeply deeply embedded into society. More affluent older people vote at much higher rates than younger poorer people. Whites vote at higher rates than AAs and especially Latinos. Long-standing patterns. 3/ And the thing with retirees voting at very high rates. Well, they’re retired. Not so busy. This isn’t snark. Just pointing out that a lot of this is foundational. Requires a lot of organizing, ways to make voting simpler etc etc etc.

Change Election Day to the weekend or make it a holiday. A majoritarian small ‘d’ democratic reform that Democrats would support and every Republican oppose.

Ok - sorry @haroldpollack, but I get a little tired of the whole idea that someone is working to prevent people from voting and we need need to do something about it. Turn out in total is not a whole lot higher with early voter programs and other measures or prove me wrong.

No - but would be happy to if u have a link to a summary. I want to some solid data on the number of people who want to vote who are denied the vote. Voter turnout is low - but I frankly prefer people who are not informed and have no desire to vote to sty home and not vote

North Carolina's stated reason for shutting down Sunday voting was that counties with heavy Sunday voting were disproportionately African-American, and that African-Americans tended to be Democrats. http://pdfserver.amlaw.com/nlj/7-29-16%204th%20Circuit%20NAACP%20v%20NC.pdf …pic.twitter.com/jwU3E5cJlx

BroadlyJeff: We know this is the strategy. It’s been used in state after state. I guess one could try to defend it—good luck —or claim it hasn’t been that effective. But it’s undeniable that making it harder for Dem voting blocs (non white/students) to vote who *is the intent.*

I'm not even really arguing with that point! (I might argue with it, but not here and not now.) I'm just saying that people with avowedly bad motivations don't openly confess them before the Court. That's mind-blowing, if it actually happened.

This is correct. It was based on interpreting a couple of Roberts-era SCOTUS voting rights opinions to mean that using "Democrat" as a euphemism for "black" was the only fig leaf required to cover up a racial gerrymander. Lower courts didn't read them that way, turns out.
