    Finally, let's not forget that HUD proposed to make this "remove the inputs" approach a defense against disparate impact. Like so many others, argued against that proposal in October. I just wish we had this paper to cite to then. 7/7

    Facebook says: "An advertiser determined to discriminate against people can do so ... we are only the digital media platform ...." Give me a break. Advertisers have no idea. And Facebook has an easy remedy: Just pull the darn tool. 5/x

    We created a Special Ad audience based on Facebook employees. As you might guess, the result was mostly male, mostly young. Remember: This is coming from the tool that employers are *encouraged* to use. 4/x

    The figures in the paper are striking. We suspected that removing demographics from the Lookalike algorithm wouldn't make big a difference, but it made almost no difference at all. 3/x
