According to digiconomist, the average carbon footprint of a single Bitcoin transaction is around 396.92kg of CO2. That's like burning 46 gallons of gasoline when you want to pay a friend for dinner.https://twitter.com/pjf/status/1057419993518768128 …

    Harlan Haskins added,

    Paul Fenwick @pjf
At the end of January, bitcoin mining consumed electricity at the rate of 46TWh/yr, more than the ENTIRE country of New Zealand. It's now 73TWh/yr; on par with the whole of Austria. 80% of the world's countries use less electricity than bitcoin.

Harlan I will be very disappointed if you don't follow up this viralish tweet with a link to your podcast. Also next ep needs to include a segment on what even is a bitcoin

We don't know about the 396 kg , but the "around" .92 kg seems spot on. 🧐 This also means a single $Burstcoin transaction will cause around(!) 0.79384 g of CO₂.

Correction, I re-crunched the numbers myself, 17.6kg CO2 per gallon of E-10 (unrelated to my name) means it's 22.6 gallons of gas equivalent per BTC transaction. That's still the entire capacity of my truck's gas tank. CRIMINALIZE CRYPTO. @NoahTheBastola @lil_bagel

Inferences like these are invalid, without knowing the distribution over energy sources. I also think statements like these are unhelpful because they divert responsibility. More positive: encourage ppl to vote for carbon tax, convince people to eat less meat, buy less cars etc

Fight negative reputation of nuclear. These steps have advantage of solving multiple problems at once while taking large substantial steps against the impacts of climate change. (note: btc has economic incentive towards renewable: attaching to a source eventually pays for itself)

Okay, but also STOP USING BITCOIN. It is *designed* to run on an unsustainable digital gold standard.

I think there's utility to it, not to replace "fiat" or digital gold or whatever. Its transparency & mechanisms are useful in scenarios where there's a lack of trust. Example: to combat climate change, developing nations need to skip dirty energy sources. But this is unfair

Because developed nations are the current source of the problem & also got the world into this by exploiting cheap dirty sources. One way is to incentivize cooperation towards cleaner sources. Currently this is simply a way to line the pockets of corrupt NGOs & govn officials.

Equipped with easier tools to trace inputs/outputs, such corruption would be harder to hide. Without central control & a high computational cost, it's harder to fake. I can imagine a future with digital contracts connected to trusted oracles before payments are released.

In essence, could serve as trust amplifiers by being part of correlating device to acheive correlated equilibriums. Certainly doesn't look like it will scale as a currency (even though I will note, is currently the least racist way to receive intl payment eg no 3rd world patreon)

To clarify, tracking timestamps/input-output flows increases auditability. Can't rely on other party to do what it says. A tradeable token not controlled by them & not easily forgable has utility. Additionally, accountability is amplified by tools regular people can use to track
