"What we need [are] employers who are willing to support employees to do this." Federal subsidies, grants, and scholarships could help. Education reform, socialization of education, and generally making education a cultural priority in the US would be better but less realistic.

What would be great is if employers started viewing this as a benefit, like health insurance or 401k matching, they offer offer to improve their ability to hire and retain people.

Support from employers would be great. For example, at the U of West Florida, there is a state employee tuition waiver program -- https://uwf.edu/offices/registrar/tuition--fees/state-employee-tuition-waiver/ …. Still problematic in terms of time. If you're working 9 to 5, you're stuck with night or online courses.

Faculty at UWF can apply for up to 2 courses per semester, for themselves or dependents. Tuition for senior citizens for a class is free as well.
