In “The Problem with Apu,” I used Apu & The Simpsons as an entry point into a larger conversation about the representation of marginalized groups & why this is important. The Simpsons response tonight is not a jab at me, but at what many of us consider progress.

#TheSimpsons completely toothless response to @harikondabolu #TheProblemWithApu about the racist character Apu:
"Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect... What can you do?"

The vast majority of Simpsons characters are stereotypes. It’s explicitly acknowledged in the show. Why you’re so offended by Apu in particular is beyond me. He’s not being singled out.

Honestly, it's too hedged and weird for me to even really know what they're saying. I don't know whether the clip I was able to find was the whole thing, but if so, it felt like both a dig at political correctness and a tail-between-the-legs non-admission of guilt. Weak.

Says the white guy standing in front of the American flag. I don’t know why so many of you need to use it as a focal point, it’s almost as if you need to prove your citizenship more than us.
