I love when a bunch of Harvard white guys tell us what’s racist

I was never a fan of
@TheSimpsons because, like many Indian kids, I was made fun of in school and mocked with the Apu character’s exaggerated accent. I think it’s great that you tried to explain to these rich white guys why their portrayal was offensive; I wouldn’t have bothered. -
But some Indians do have that accent when speaking English
-
Okay, so that justifies bullying? I speak American English and I got made fun of with that accent because of my skin color. I’m never gonna let my kids watch that trash. And I’m not gonna let them think it’s OK to make fun of anyone’s accents. Do what you like; I don’t care.
-
Oh now it's about your skin color why you got mocked for your accent you just said it was cuz of apu character from The Simpson seriously you're just reaching now.. I know plenty of East Indians that love the show have a sense of humor if you don't like it then don't watch it..
-
OK, it seems that reading comprehension is not your strong suit. I was born in America and I don’t have a foreign accent. But people made fun of me with that accent because of my skin color. I don’t intend to ever watch your trashy show and my kids will never watch it either.
-
Isn't Apu portrayed as richer, more educated and successful opposed to the main characters who are essentially white trash. Is the white trash portrayl of the Simpsons not a stereotype of middle America? It seems to me that they balance the stereotype. Why the selective outrage?
-
I sincerely don’t understand why you are addressing this comment to me. As I explained in my tweet, I never watched the show. All I know is I was made fun of with an exaggerated Indian accent and called “Apu” by white kids who watched the Simpsons. “Selective outrage,” really?

The people who are the target of it taking a while to find their voices doesn't mean that it "became" offensive. It always was. Political correctness = common decency. It's not about politics, it's about humanity.
-
In part it’s political correctness that got you Trump.
-
I don't think that wanting fewer racial stereotypes caused Trump. Asking for people to be treated with decency and respect isn't a political statement.
-
Political correctness isn't imo avoiding racial stereotypes or treating people decently. It's a phony delicacy whose purpose is to force people to use newspeak and avoid thoughtcrime. Trump's "plain-speaking" felt like liberation to just enough people in just the right states.
-
This country is full of entrenched racism hundred of years old. We called disabled kids "retarded" and warehoused them, my parents and grandparents generation called any brown person by the racial slur du jour. Gay people were ostracized *at best*.
-
The mentally ill, from depression onward, were labotomized. Those were the "good old days." Asking people to use terms that do not remove the humanity from a person because they are brown, love differently, have disabilities, or mental illness, is not asking a lot.
-
If that onerous "political correctness" is asking too much, if it's too much to ask for races to not be a caricature in our entertainment, then Trump is what we deserve. Asking folks to acknowledge basic humanity doesn't come close to alleging "thought crime." it's just decent.
-
we aren't talking about racial slurs or things done with the intent to offend. there are times when the seeking of political correctness goes too far, and strays into the realm of thought police.
