The way @elonmusk hires people is reminiscent of how new startups and small hedge funds hire. But in the case of small shops, it may simply be due to the constraint that they can’t attract top PhDs and academics) compared to large tech companies and big investment banks / funds.
Whatever he's doing, it seems to be working out so far. As the old saying goes: “People are your greatest asset”pic.twitter.com/Rih8fDLnsl
When he said he's looking for people who can “implement NNs in a way that is actually useful (latter point is what’s truly hard)”

There are so many people getting offended over the comment about a Phd not being important nor required. People are so elitist about degrees. Doing a PhD puts you at a massive advantage over others, why do they still feel the need to bring non-Phds down even further?
Because most of them are getting the PhD for the love of the title and not research.
Shouldn't a PhD be a "training to become a researcher" while helping the field/community grow?
e.g. @starstrickenSF 's enthusiasm during her discoveries and the way she explains it to everyone!
Let's remember that Walter Pitts who pioneered neural networks did not have a formal education and never finished his PhD. http://nautil.us/issue/21/information/the-man-who-tried-to-redeem-the-world-with-logic … .
sounds great! Pretty sure they will favor PhD graduates with at least 5 first author publication in NeurIPS/ICML/ICLR :D
What does “favor” mean here. You might be missing the obvious confounder...
