It also depends on the person. Personally, I think I'm good at Idea-Driven approach to research, and I'm really bad at Goal-Driven approach (hence I rarely work in teams > 3 people). I enjoy more working on ideas that diverge from the rest of the community, than going for SOTA.

yes, idea driven is the hard road. Imagine pursuing an idea when all the funding, all of the leaders tell you that your direction is a waste of time. That is why Hinton, Bengio and Le Cun deserve every award they get.

I am probably more goal-driven style. My only goal is to make classical literature more accessible and cool. I don't even know how.

I'm a bit disagree with this definition of idea-driven research. Idea-driven research in my view is something that closer to philosophy. 1/2

i. Build knowledge of ML, read textbooks, theses & papers, ii. Read a lot of papers, & assess them critically, iii. Read PhD theses of researchers whose work interests you, iv. Reimplement alg's from these source(s), v. Read & skim papers with a critical eye, vi. Notice trends
