Many people often complain that most of the “low-hanging fruit” has already been picked. They are probably only looking for them in the most crowded places. In fact, low-hanging fruits are everywhere, looking to be picked. 🍎

As much as I wish that you were right, I think there's strong reason to think that it is harder to innovate now than it was in the past. @EconTalker had an interesting related discussion with @patrickc today (http://www.econtalk.org/patrick-collison-on-innovation-and-scientific-progress/ …) following onhttps://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/11/diminishing-returns-science/575665/ …

That's not to say that it can't be done, but some amount of the innovation search space has already been covered and building on prior discoveries requires more advanced expertise.

Been thinking about @michael_nielsen's thread too. Maybe things can be improved. As mentioned, “Better understanding the cause of this phenomenon is important, and identifying ways to reverse it is one of the greatest opportunities to improve our future.”https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1063417043372859392 …

I think deep learning will totally revolutionize systems biology in a way that the field will become completely unrecognizable 10 years from now. The ODE formulation of DL is near perfect for biological systems.

Most low-hanging fruit is in areas where a reward system (fame, profit, power) for fruit pickers has not been established. To pick it up, you have to ignore rewards for individuals. That’s hard.
