How does one come up with radically new, high impact ideas, and become a senior researcher? I don’t have the answer, but I think being more creative helps. I find that this list of questions help me filter out what I should spend my time working on:pic.twitter.com/ENq3fhG7xK

This list of questions are from this book by Sir John Hegarty, who is not a research scientist, but the founder of three famous creative advertising agencies. I talked about the need for more creative approaches in research, and used his heuristics during my talk at #NeurIPS2018.pic.twitter.com/2nauBOwDlg

Notice that “novelty” appears nowhere on this list.

Makes me sad that the education system spends nearly two decades demanding conformity, objective metrics of success and rote memorization and then expects creativity at the end.

That is exactly why I home educate my five children, so they learn to think rather than just what to think. I know it is working when they challenge me if they do not understand or agree with what I say. In a normal school environment such responses are often met with punishment.

I find the questions on the slide a bit difficult to answer, but I do think that having a long-term research goal helps with deciding what to work on. You naturally work on what's currently missing to solve your problem.

Great points. IMO, to be radically creative you need to sacrifice the known and embrace the fear of unknown and your support system should let you do that. If the expectation is that you churn out 10 published papers every year, that ain't gonna aid creativity.

According to Jordan Peterson, very few people are genuinely creative, and even if you are, most of the time your ideas are rejected or stolen (his point is, you can't learn to be creative, you either somehow are or not by some combination of factors)

Your heuristics are certainly important. They refer to the P-creativity (or personal): novel to the agent that produces it. Impactful & radical ideas are also H-creative (historically) they are recognized as novel by society. It depends on who assesses the conceptual space

Some guidlines include : copy, modify, combine. Also green is not creative. My 2¢.

I agree 100%, but who is going to train the NN for performing a medical stool analysis? The shity jobs should not be seen as beneath anyone's rank to do, because sometimes importance is not linked to aesthetics.

Yesterday, I was wondering... Can one learn to be more creative? I hope so, because that's a point of frustration for me lately. (I'm naturally one of those nails that wouldn't think of sticking up.)
