Robert Runte's absolutely blockbusting review of What the Wind Brings, my historical/magical realism novel about shipwrecked slaves who melded with indigenous people in mid-1500s Ecuador and beat the conquistadors of Quito to a standstill.

This past month, I gladly seized upon The Archer's Tale, a Bernard Cornwell historical I'd never heard of, found in a used book store. Turns out it's the US title of Harlequin, a book I read years ago. Fortunately, my memory is so bad these days it was almost a fresh read.

It takes some people a while to warm up to Chesney. He's . . . unusual.

I'm working on a new Dying Earth novel. It centers on the perils and predicaments of a necromancer in the city of Golathreon. I'm now at 20k words and the story is developing as my stories usually do, striking off in new directions as new characters come on stage. Good fun.

I'm starting to get responses from people to whom I sent ARCs of Barbarians of the Beyond, the authorized sequel to Jack Vance's The Demon Princes. Three good ones, so far. I'll share some in the near future.

I've sent ARCs of Barbarians of the Beyond to a dozen marquee-name authors and critics, as well as efiles to bloggers and folks who might generate some buzz. One major mainstream literary critic has taken an interest. Fingers crossed.

Yesterday, I spent a half-hour talking about What the Wind Brings and writer stuff with Matt Nappo, for his Minddog streaming show. It’s now up on YouTube:

I know there's a lot going on right now, but if you'd welcome a distraction from all that... let's talk about short fiction! I'm in the midst of finalizing my Top 80 stories for BASFF, and I'd love to hear what stories from 2020 y'all were most excited about.

I've received a typeset of Barbarians of the Beyond, the authorized sequel to Jack Vance's Demon Princes quintilogy. I'm going to get ARCs made up and send them out for blurbs and word-of-mouth buzz-creation. I think this is going to be an event in the SFosphere. More to come.

I loved that cover. Got the publisher to use it on the fix-up novel, The Commons.

“The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.” L.P. Hartley. I once riffed an entire speech on the conceit that we are all emigrants from the past to a foreign future, where we will do things differently. Wish I’d kept it.

Pulp Literature Press is offering 20% off What The Wind Brings at the PLP store. Discount code: XMAS2020 WTWB a historical novel with magical realism elements, is in my qualified opinion, the best work I’ve ever done.

I’ve finished “Arboghasz Dal Axander Rides Again,” bringing back Luff Imbry, and sent it to Lightspeed. Now, I think I’ll do a Baldemar for Ed Willett, who launches a January Kickstarter for a collection by authors who have been interviewed for his podcast, Shapers of Worlds.
