This year we tried a “pedagogy of kindness” approach in my undergrad class. Partly, this meant that we recognized our students all have different experiences & have gone through different journeys to get here. 1/

For the first time, scientists have filmed atoms forming & breaking chemical bonds. Those two black dots are *individual atoms* of rhenium waltzing across a field of carbon atoms.

  12. With the outbreak of the coronavirus and the Lieber news, part of me is so relieved I'm not in grad school anymore. Those would make at least months of constant teasing and humiliating, jokes like "let's kill the Chinese", using those as "facts that show you Chinese are all evil"

  16. TL;DR: make orientation materials available to students after orientation; give examples of common issues they’ll likely face to show them resources available (instead of just giving a wordy list of resources), and follow up to remind them of the resources and for feedback. (7/7)

  17. Ask questions like “what are the things that they encountered that they wish had been covered in the orientation?” That way, you can address common issues faced by the int’l students at your department/institution in particular at your next orientation (6/7)

  18. It would also be helpful to check on the int’l students some time (e.g. 1 year) after the orientation. It can be just an email reminding them of important resources available and people to contact if they need help. It can also be a chance to ask them for feedback: (5/n)

  19. Also, there’re some common issues int’l students may encounter: discrimination/bullying; difficulty navigating the academic system, etc.. It would be helpful to give some representative examples in each case, and show students what resources are available. (4/n)

  20. Because of that, I suggest making orientation materials (documents; recordings with subtitles to help int’l students understand if it is not in their first language) available to students during their time at your school, or at least for one year or so. (3/n)
