Two things I want to share to meaningfully complicate the simple story around our studio flat rate, and the paid Narrative Design & Writing internship (because running a studio as well as possible is really goddam complicated.)
1. The studio flat rate is 2900dkk for contractors, and 45k for employees. 2. The flat rate rises after you’ve been with us for a year, everyone is bumped to 3200/50k. 3. the day rate accounts for holidays you don’t get as a contractor, and the 4 day week, BUT [...]
It’s just simply broken for 2 cases I can’t solve: 1. The tiny number of countries in the world without socialised healthcare (
), where that money goes way less far. 2. I can’t do sick pay for contractors, and I can’t employ across borders. (Fuck borders, healthcare for all).
2. Paid internships are best practice almost all the time but I wanted to also share that we will be working with 2 interns in the Spring who are students resident in Denmark (on the excellent ITU Game Design masters) whom I cannot pay.
We worked really hard to find out if we could! But if you’re resident in Denmark studying at a uni, the state pays for you to do so. They’re paid a ‘wage’ to study, but if I pay them, they lose that, and even if I pay the flat rate it doesn’t make up for losing the student money.
This, btw, is excellent, I don’t need to be a hero for 2 people when the state can step in for all of them. We will work hard to find every opportunity to make their ‘company collaboration’ placement meaningful & rewarding.
These are the material & varied realities of running a company! I do my best every day, & I’m sure I still miss ways (or more often, resources) to do better. But one way I thought I could be useful is to offer the complicated story, rather than just the ‘good press’ simple one.
