  2. in addition to being an extremely atrocious take, this is very unhelpful to religious folks struggling with depression and suicide who struggle to have conversations about suicidal ideations with pastors/priests/etc. and receive the sort of "one-way ticket to hell" response

evidently Lauren Southern and Brittany Pettibone are in Russia for a "massive project" that, if their YouTube trailer of sorts is any indication, appears to be little more than a series of interviews to help the West understand Russia, which is mysterious.

anyway, i just thought i'd throw that in there since i've seen a few pieces on "the americans" and religion writ large, some of which somehow don't even mention russian orthodoxy, which is... weird.

in its own weird way, "the americans" ended up complicating the standard narrative you get about orthodoxy and its relationship to the state and to the people—especially those who were opposed to the church on ideological grounds—during this period, both in the USSR and abroad.

this is meant to be happening around the same time as a crucial period of time for the russian orthodox church, both in soviet russia and abroad: the church, the show makes clear, isn't an independent body, but its priests still operate as individuals

then, of course, there's father andre's own situation. he never seems particularly forced, and—as the one priest's complaint about fr. andre's “moral weakness”—shows, there's clearly some sense, rightly or wrongly, that he's doing this somewhat willingly.

"i know it's not perfect with god and everything," says philip, in jest, in season 5 right before what was probably one of the best scenes in the entire show. all this after elizabeth's obvious discomfort with paige's own faith.

that said, i think overall the show did a good job of portraying, in the limited time it spent on this subject, the tension between the obvious cultural import of orthodoxy and the fact that the "official" soviet mentality toward it was often, at best, one of disapproval.
