Now that Facebook and Youtube have launched Patreon clones I hope it's really obvious that both of those companies likely tried to acquire Patreon for gobs of money and Patreon's leadership chose to not sell. I just want to be publicly thankful for that.

And if you want to read some reasons why people are skeptical of Facebook's efforts, The Verge has a good article: https://www.theverge.com/2019/2/26/18241756/facebook-fan-subscriptions-patreon-pages … I now return to my vacation. We're having tacos. Goodbye!

They also let MasterCard dictate the speech permitted by their users

They should have NO influence, they are glorified paper pushers, none of the money comes from them and their high handed moralizing is becoming more pathetic by the day. let's not forget the hypocrisy also.

FB and Google provide a lot of tech and heavy lifting around video. Also their network on sales & distribution may net them more money. So not strictly comparable.

I use Ko-fi Gold, which takes a flat rate of $6/month regardless of how much you make from subscribers and has a free feature. PayPal takes a % fee to handle the money, but Ko-fi doesn't. I like Patreon but 10% starts sounding rather steep after a bit. 30% is ludicrous. Hell no.
-
My Patreon is really small so my experience is only based on my handful of patrons, but Patreon's fee + payment processing only ends up being 7 or 8% each month so from my perspective 30% is more or less 4x the amount I'm used to handing over!
