Also, annotations (while clunky) were really useful! and I think the real reason their use declined was that they never made it to mobile. I suspect there was a technical reason for that, but I don't think it's "annotations aren't used;" it's "mobile is increasingly used".
Yeah, annotations were impossible to port to mobile and also were abused LOTS. Cards and endscreen is much more controlling to avoid abuse, but also it prevents many of the uses that I was most interested in (mostly fixing mistakes.)
People didn't put work into annotations? They aren't worth preserving as well? I don't see credits as nearly as bad of a loss. I don't think the average user ever journeys to the bottom of the description anyway.
