A question on programming and infrastructure virtualisation models. Is "declarative, version-controlled" really opposed to "direct-manipulation"? Can I do "direct-manipulation" and still get the benefits of version control? Because I wish I could.

Ahh, yes! Underlying it is the notion that a story can be complete, with a formal structure, yet still be nondeterminstic. Last year recommended reading “Tell Me A Story: Narrative and Intelligence” by Roger Schank, which opened a whole new lens into stories:

"The thing you make teaches you what it is that you wanted to make" is an idea I've seen in a couple of places. I want to collect some of the different variations of the statement.

Is there a future where OSs keep track of things? Where they never forget (delete) unless we tell them to? Where version control and backup are implicit? How does the interface to this look like?

That feeling when one finally closes a browser tab, after weeks of keeping it open in search of a moment to read it (which never arrived). Repeats 3 times: *The web is a river, don't try to hold on*.

if you find a conversational partner who’s willing to get a little weird, you can use the room you’re in to build a shared memory palace. when you discover an interesting train of thought, you “place” it somewhere in the room. pretty soon, you’re literally surrounded by the convo

Why the FUCK do men treat logic as the antithesis to emotion? Why do they act like emotion and reason have a negative correlation? As if the less emotion there is, the more intelligence is present??

Mañana habrá completado uno de los mayores despropósitos ferroviarios de Europa: desprenderse voluntariamente en 40 años de 2 líneas de tren con capacidad para +500k pasajeros/año cada una. Abro hilo.

Asynchronous Murder Mystery Set in your standard British mansion with the usual cast of characters. Player 1 commits a murder, then sends the game state to player 2 who must attempt to solve it.

“Balzac carried a razor blade around his neck for cutting up his manuscript. Tolstoy would cut up his manuscripts and leave all the pieces around the floor. This is true cut-and-paste, where you’re re-arranging on a large scale and able to see the relationships between parts” -TN

"The City is Not a Tree" by Christopher Alexander gets into this from the perspective of cities, but I think it applies to a lot of "non-linear hairballs of connections" that people impose "linear hierarchies" on(organizations, taxonomies, learning, etc):
