Personal news: I am writing a book for . It is called Year of the Hammer, and it's going to be a deeply reported look at how the labor movement can be the tool that fixes America, and whether the labor movement can rise to that challenge. Please buy it one day.

BAD: Hire IRS agents to ensure the rich pay taxes. GOOD: Hire Medicaid agents to ensure that anyone who does not submit three fast food job applications per week will be forced into a diabetic coma.

The police union issue was forced into the mainstream during the BLM protests and I can tell you that most of the institutions in organized labor have zero desire to talk about it. Time to keep talking about it.

We stand with those protesting the horrific police murder of Tyre Nichols and call on the leaders of the labor movement to take action to continue abolishing systemic oppression. Remove police unions from our labor federations now! workersunitedupstate.org/2020/06/16/wor

I would be grateful if someone made a publicly accessible website listing every media industry scab by name so that we could all reference it for years to come.

Educators in Florida and particularly teachers unions and all the higher ed unions in the state need to be seriously considering a strike over what Desantis is doing to schools. Not hyperbole. It is guaranteed to get worse if he gets no real resistance. Time to act is now.

A newspaper’s content should over the long term accurately reflect the relative importance of various issues which means the NYT needs to cut 14,000 fearmongering words about trans people and use those words on labor stories

This piece does such a good job of making the point that the sheer, insane volume of “just asking questions” stories about trans issues in the NYT and other prestige outlets is journalistic malpractice.

Jim Jordan on Meet The Press: “I don’t know that there’s any law that can stop this [police violence]… Democrats always think there’s a new law.” At last Republicans are moving past the failed “tough on crime” philosophy, as long as the crime is done by cops.

The AFL-CIO's headquarters were burned and vandalized during protests following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. The AFL responded with this report. Tyre Deandre was murdered this week. The plan did not work. Thank you for this work.

Media unions, we really need to get together and figure out standards to deal with this in our contracts sooner not later. It's coming.

I agree that this must be done and also: the culture war and class war (as laid out here) are inseparable, if indistinguishable. A DeSantis classroom book ban is an attempt to undermine teachers’ power at work; a fighting union could help fight these bans and undermine DeSantis.

Rationally you would think that times like this, when thousands of journalists are getting laid off, would be an opportunity for prestige outlets to purge their staffs of the worst, most complacent writers, and take their pick of new generations of talent. But actually, no.

College president is consistently high on the “Sniveling moral failure” career list. Right up there with corporate lawyers. You’d think all the books you have to read to get the job would have some effect, but no.
