The Child Tax Credit and the Canada Child Benefit have also been shown to support child health and education outcomes, improve maternal mental health, and bolster "household stability." i.e Less financial stress = stronger more stable family lifehttps://www.expandthechildtaxcredit.com
Child allowances have been enacted by conservative governments abroad, but pro-family conservatives in the United States have had their ambitions lowered by a series of bad arguments. I tackle a few of them here:https://www.niskanencenter.org/bad-arguments-child-allowance/ …
The most pernicious myth is the idea that child allowances are like AFDC welfare, and will cause single moms to drop out of the labor force. Yet when Canada enacted its child allowance in 2006 (originally $2000 per child; now ~$6,500), employment went up unmarried mothers.pic.twitter.com/Vp7V25Fssu
AFDC's work disincentive wasn't from cash, but from the severe clawback it applied to earnings. Child allowances, as a universal or near-universal program (phasing out past $250,000), don't have the same marginal-tax effects. And the pure income-effect from cash is small.
I did a quick and dirty photoshop of the Tax Policy Center's graph of the Child Tax Credit from above, overlaying the Romney and Bennet proposal (in green and violet) against current law (in blue).pic.twitter.com/Mi980n6FaO
@ABA_CRSJ Human Rights Version describing the horror of childhood poverty in America today. The impact on poor kids’ brains is analogous to a stroke. A fully refundable tax credit helps! @TalkPoverty @rebeccavallas @TaxNotes @DarrickHamilton @SethHanlonhttps://www.americanbar.org/groups/crsj/publications/human_rights_magazine_home/economic-justice/taxing-poor-kids/ …
I think this is a good thing, but are we still pretending that conservative opposition to abortion is really about protecting unborn life rather than stopping people from having premarital sex?
