the conferences I have attended grad students and post docs presenting is the norm for the most part (less so for peeps coming from overseas maybe, not sure whether funding or culture or both) not sure what it's like in other fields

maybe you will help me out with another one -- why do so many professors not name the first author of the paper a corresponding author? i can't think of any charitable explanation

Same in medicine. Plenty of trainees presenting at big conferences (ASH and ASCO). Similar for basic science (AACR, some ASH).
