The impression I've gotten every year over the last few years is that Google's not living in denial of the established Apple/Samsung duopoly. But they want Pixel to be excellent anyway, and make it uniquely compelling to the average consumer by leveraging Google's strengths.

If they were doing just a great phone, this might be a fool's errand. But the story and the reason Pixel is compelling and has a chance is because it's just one part of what I think is — or is quickly becoming — the most compelling consumer tech ecosystem.

Not the mention, the phone they sell today — and it *is* great — looks likely to not be the most important part of said ecosystem in the 10-year outlook.

because it has worked so well for pixel sales in the past I love the Pixel, but this is not the iPhone. You can't point to sales and say "well it doesn't matter what you think because it sells billions!"
-
Yeah I'd say it is working well so far actually
-
By what metric? It's easily my favorite device and I already bought one, but I don't see it as a success in the smartphone market.
-
Steady growth year over year, very strong compliment to the rest of the Google ecosystem (which is a win for Google hardware sales in general), Google managing to already get it recognized as having the best phone camera in pop culture... and it's only been two years lol
-
Yes I am well aware of these figures.
-
Which makes it hard to say “it’s working well so far” appealing to average buyers.
-
Not really, considering the competitiveness of the market, and Apple's foothold, and how early it is. As Google slowly grows a loyal base in its ecosystem in general (of which phone is not the most important part in the 10 year+ outlook), Pixel sales will grow automatically.

when did the hardcore community get so toxic?
-
Probably since always. Those in any sort of hardcore community tend to be very passionate about a topic, and can sometimes be in a bit of an online bubble with other uber passionate people who reflect similar views back to them.
-
I think you can be passionate about something but you need to be rational
-
Totally agree! I find the tribalism due to brands/OS' in tech to be a bit weird. I love, and want, ALL the tech!
-
yup just go with the thing that works best for you

It is the iPhone of Androids. It'll sell well to the average user if they get in front of them enough.

Hardcore fans are still salty that they stopped following the Nexus model.

There is no metric nor any statistic that proves your point. It hasn't worked well at all. You have to remember we're talking about Pixel and not an iPhone.
